Par Pawtounes 7 Min de Lecture

Cats belong to a large category of animals known as “felines”. They can be wild or domestic, but the most common of all is the house cat. The domestic cat has always been recognized as the ally and companion of human beings. Some people prefer males, others females. What about you? Do you have a preference for the sex of your cat? What exactly should you base your cat’s sex choice on? In this article, you’ll discover the particularities of both male and female cats.

Male cat definition and characteristics

When we speak of the male species, we mean the male sex. Let’s start by saying that the male cat is known to be adventurous and more aloof than the female. You’ll discover these attitudes for yourself if you spend a lot of time with your cat.

Generally speaking, a male cat will need to mark his territory, i.e. imbue a territory with his presence. To mark its territory, it performs a urine squirt, which consists in choosing a spot where it will relieve itself. He will always return to this spot to relieve himself. On the other hand, male cats tend to wander away from home, seeking female company to reproduce. He also likes to fight with his opponents if they want to integrate into his home. To be more precise, the common habits of male cats are as follows:

  • The quest for independence,
  • Noisy meows,
  • Urine marking,
  • Claws (another type of territorial marking),
  • Hunting,
  • Vagrancy,
  • Repeated runaways,
  • Fights between congeners,
  • Emotional instability due to the proximity of other males, which can even turn into anxiety,
  • Vulnerability to certain serious illnesses,
  • Increased risk of accidents,
  • Shortened life expectancy.

Female cat definition and characteristics

The female cat refers, first and foremost, to the genus that is capable of procreating and giving birth to kittens. Unlike cats, pussies are said to be cuddlier and gentler. However, this is not a confirmed character trait, as sometimes males can also be gentle. However, it should be noted that females are more home-loving than males. They rarely go far from home. They will only disappear during their heat period, when they mate.

These moments of heat are often quite delicate and bring about many changes in the female. These include repetitive meowing, urinating in certain places and much more. If you notice your cat is in heat, it’s best to keep her indoors to prevent her from escaping.

However, outside these rutting moments, female cats have their own characters. These are :

  • Restlessness,
  • Brawls with other rival females,
  • Noisy meows,
  • The need for more attention,
  • Exacerbated sensitivity,
  • Marking the territory,
  • Frequent urges to go out,
  • Running away,
  • Loss of appetite,
  • Particular postures (hindquarters raised and tail held over the side),
  • Vulnerability to serious illness,
  • Shorter life expectancy.

Cat or cat: what are the criteria?

Contrary to what some people think, a cat’s sex has no influence on its predisposition to be cuddly and affectionate. This attitude stems from early socialization, experience and prolonged contact with humans. As a result, many owners opt to keep the gender of their pet a secret . Some simply opt for sterilization or castration. You should also bear in mind that there are several other equally important parameters to take into account when adopting your new pet. Will the animal live in an apartment or a house with a garden?

Should you spay or neuter your cat?

In general, male and female cats are quite similar in character, and there aren’t many differences between them. Their personalities are not limited to their sex, as male castration tends to diminish their differences.

Male cat

Do you have a male cat and don’t know whether it’s necessary or advisable to neuter him or not? The main purpose of neutering your cat is to prevent reproduction. As soon as a cat is 6 months old, it starts marking its territory all over the house and running away in search of a female in heat. But adult neutered cats don’t behave this way.

Neutering your cat is very important, as it will help reduce the population of potentially stray kittens resulting from unions with local females. What’s more, a neutered cat is recommended, as it will cause less damage to your home (no more territory marking with claws and the like).

Pussy

Cats are delicate during their heat periods. To prevent your cat from meowing regularly, you can spay her. This will also prevent unwanted pregnancies. Sterilization also reduces the risk of uterine infection, or tumors of the uterus and ovaries. Earlyoophorectomy reduces the risk of developing breast tumors to zero. If you’re planning to spay your cat, it’s important to do it before she’s a year old.

Male cats differ from female cats in several ways. However, any behavioral differences between male and female cats can be eliminated by spaying the male and neutering the female. So, whether you choose a cat or a she-cat, it’s possible that after spaying or neutering, your cat will display the basic behaviors of a cat. So, whether it’s a cat or a she-cat, it’s still a very lovable feline that loves to cuddle. The choice is yours!
